“We have to factor in…”- BCCI Secretary Jay Shah speaks on increasing IPL matches to 84 from 2025 season onwards
BCCI Secretary Jay Shah recently indicated that discussions are ongoing regarding the potential increase in the number of IPL matches from the current 74 to 84 starting from the 2025 season. Shah noted that while such an expansion aligns with the board’s broadcast rights and sponsorship agreements, they must also consider the impact on players’ workload.
The existing sponsorship contracts call for an increase to 84 matches for the 2025-26 season, with a further rise to 94 matches in 2027. A move to 84 matches would likely extend the IPL by at least a week and might require adding more franchises to the league.
The BCCI has yet to make a final decision, and Shah emphasized that both majority and minority opinions will be weighed carefully. “We haven’t finalized whether to organize 84 matches for IPL 2025, as we need to consider the additional strain on players. Although 84 matches are included in the contract, it’s ultimately up to the BCCI to decide between 74 and 84 matches,” Shah told the Economic Times.
Sources close to the matter have reported that IPL broadcasters Star India and Viacom18 prefer maintaining the current 74-match format, citing concerns about potential viewer fatigue and challenges with ad revenue, despite increased viewership in recent years. On the other hand, teams are advocating for the expanded 84-match format.
Additionally, there is ongoing debate over the potential for a mega auction in 2025 and the number of player retentions allowed, with franchise owners yet to reach a consensus.
Shah’s remarks suggest the board is still considering its options and seeking a balanced approach. “Some franchises support a mega auction to strengthen their teams, while others oppose it as they already have a solid lineup. Both continuity and team changes are important factors,” he added.
With significant decisions on the horizon, the coming months are expected to be both busy and pivotal for Indian cricket.
