Zaheer Khan in front contention with Lucknow Super Giants for mentor role ahead of IPL 2025- Report

Zaheer Khan is reportedly in discussions with the Lucknow Super Giants about taking on a mentor role. After Gautam Gambhir transitioned to Kolkata following IPL 2023, the Super Giants found themselves without a mentor, and Morne Morkel’s recent resignation has further opened up the position.

Both Gambhir and Morkel, who served as the team’s bowling coach for three seasons, have either joined or are expected to join the Indian national team.

Zaheer Khan is under consideration for the mentor position and might also assist the team’s bowlers. In this role, he could act as an important intermediary between the players and the franchise’s management, led by a highly engaged owner.

Although Zaheer was initially a candidate for the role of bowling coach with Gambhir’s new Team India, he was not selected as the BCCI chose Morkel, likely due to Gambhir’s recommendation.

Zaheer, who has extensive IPL coaching experience from his time with the Mumbai Indians, could potentially join head coach Justin Langer and an accomplished coaching staff that includes Adam Voges, Lance Klusener, and Jonty Rhodes.

At 45, Zaheer Khan’s impressive playing career includes 92 Test matches, 200 ODIs, 17 T20Is, and 100 IPL games with teams such as Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals), Royal Challengers Bangalore (now Royal Challengers Bengaluru), and Mumbai Indians.
