England achieved a decisive eight-wicket victory over the West Indies in their first Super 8 match of the T20 World Cup 2024 held in St Lucia on Wednesday, June 19.
The West Indies, after being invited to bat first, set a target of 180/4. Key contributions came from Johnson Charles (38), Rovman Powell (36), and Nicholas Pooran (36). Sherfane Rutherford added a vital 28* off 15 balls towards the end of the innings.
Adil Rashid was the standout bowler for England, taking one wicket for 21 runs in his four overs. Moeen Ali (1-15 in 2 overs), Jofra Archer (1-34 in 4 overs), and Liam Livingstone (1-20 in 1 over) each claimed a wicket as well.
In response, defending champions England chased down the target with 15 balls to spare, thanks to Philip Salt’s unbeaten 87 off 47 balls and Jonny Bairstow’s 48* off 26 balls.
The Jos Buttler-led team was widely praised on social media platform X for their impressive performance with both bat and ball.
