IPL 2024: “We had so many close games,” Sam Curran reflects on season positives for PBKS after win over Rajasthan
The Punjab Kings (PBKS) secured a convincing five-wicket win over the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in their IPL 2024 match at Barsapara Cricket Stadium, Guwahati on Wednesday, May 15.
Bowling first, PBKS limited RR to 144/9 in their 20 overs. Key contributions came from skipper Sam Curran (2-24 in 3 overs), Harshal Patel (2-28 in 4 overs), Nathan Ellis (1-24 in 4 overs), and Rahul Chahar (2-26 in 4 overs).
In response, Curran led the charge with an unbeaten 63 off 41 balls, guiding Punjab to victory with seven balls remaining.
“We bowled really well as a unit. We had a lot of pride to play for. Ellis was fantastic in his first game of the season. We probably should’ve played him earlier,” Curran said at the post-match presentation.
Curran also commented on the pitch and his conversation with Jonny Bairstow upon taking the crease.
“When I went in, Jonny mentioned it was quite tough and the pitch was holding a bit. I didn’t need to take too many risks. I knew that on a ground like this, a couple of sixes would be enough,” Curran explained.
With the T20 World Cup 2024 approaching, England players are leaving the IPL to prepare for their series against Pakistan from May 22 to May 30. Curran and Bairstow have played their final IPL match of the season. “Me and Jonny are leaving tomorrow. It’s been a great season, and I’ve enjoyed captaining,” he said.
“The atmosphere around the group has been really good. Excited about the World Cup,” Curran added.
Reflecting on the season, Curran praised the local players and highlighted the team’s potential despite missing the playoffs.
“Hindsight is a wonderful thing. We had many close games. I feel like the team is close to achieving something significant. Who knows what the future holds?”
“Loads of positives though. The chase in Kolkata, Shashank Singh’s impact, Ashutosh’s contributions, and the performances of Harshal and Arshdeep have all been amazing,” Curran concluded.
