T20 World Cup 2024: WATCH- “Sad it’s my last day with New Zealand” – Trent Boult Announces Retirement from International Cricket
New Zealand pacer Trent Boult announced his retirement from international cricket, confirming that he has played his final match for New Zealand. This announcement came after New Zealand’s victory over Papua New Guinea in the T20 World Cup 2024 in Trinidad, which marked the end of their tournament run.
Boult had previously indicated that the ongoing T20 World Cup would be his last. In a video shared by the ICC, he expressed mixed emotions about the conclusion of his international career.
“It feels a little bit weird, a few emotions obviously the last couple of days,” Boult said. When asked if this game was his final appearance for New Zealand, he added, “I haven’t thought much further than this, I’m in no position to comment right now. I enjoyed being out there one last time.”
New Zealand’s losses to Afghanistan and the West Indies in Group C had already ended their chances of advancing to the Super Eights. Papua New Guinea was also out of the running before the match at Brian Lara Stadium, which drew a small crowd.
In the game, Boult took two wickets for 14 runs, helping to bowl out PNG for 78.
“Gutted to not go any further, but I’m very proud of what I’ve done with the Black Caps and sad it’s my last day with New Zealand,” Boult reflected.
The 34-year-old Trent Boult has been selectively called up for international matches since he was released from his New Zealand central contract in August 2022, which allowed him to play in more domestic T20 leagues abroad.
Boult participated in New Zealand’s 50-over World Cup campaign last year, where the team reached the semi-finals but was defeated by tournament hosts India by 70 runs at a packed Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
Boult’s record of 317 wickets in 78 Tests is the fourth highest for any New Zealand bowler. His long-time new-ball partner, Tim Southee, ranks second, behind Richard Hadlee.
“I’ve shared a dressing room with Tim Southee for well over a dozen years. It’s a partnership I’ve enjoyed forming, and we’re very good friends off the field,” said Boult, who helped New Zealand win the 2021 World Test Championship.
New Zealand captain Kane Williamson praised Boult, describing him as a “great servant of the game” and “consistent in all formats.”
“It’ll be sad to see him go. It’s been quite special being with him throughout his career. He’s got such an attitude for getting better. He trains very hard, he’s as fit as he’s ever been. He knows how he wants to operate in all formats. He sticks his chest out and performs well for his country. He’s made a fantastic contribution to our game and created a space for new players to come in and meet the standard that he’s set,” Williamson said.
