India Tour of Sri Lanka 2024: Charith Asalanka named new captain as Sri Lanka announce revamped squad for India T20I series
Sri Lanka announced a 16-member squad for their upcoming home T20I series against India on Tuesday, July 23.
Charith Asalanka has been appointed as the captain, succeeding Wanindu Hasaranga, who stepped down after Sri Lanka’s early exit from the T20 World Cup last month. Despite relinquishing the captaincy, Hasaranga remains a key player in the squad. The team has undergone several changes, with veteran all-rounder Angelo Mathews being dropped and former captain Dasun Shanaka retaining his place.
Senior players Dinesh Chandimal and Kusal Perera have been recalled to the team after missing out on the T20 World Cup 2024. Additionally, Matheesha Pathirana and Maheesh Theekshana, known for their performances with CSK in the IPL, have been included following their impressive displays in the Lanka Premier League.
New additions to the squad include Chamindu Wickramasinghe, Binura Fernando, and Avishka Fernando, while Sadeera Samarawickrama and Dilshan Madhushanka have been left out.
The three-match T20I series between Sri Lanka and India is scheduled to begin on July 27, with all matches set to be played in Pallekele.
Following the T20I series, the two teams will compete in a three-match ODI series, starting on August 2 in Colombo.
