Formal Head Coach Rahul Dravid in talks with IPL franchise Rajasthan Royals to take up head coach role: Report

Rahul Dravid, whose tenure as India’s head coach ended recently, is reportedly set to rejoin his former IPL team, Rajasthan Royals (RR). According to the Times of India, Dravid is in advanced discussions with the Royals to become their head coach.

Rajasthan Royals, the inaugural IPL champions, currently do not have a head coach. Kumar Sangakkara has been serving as the Director of Cricket since 2021, with Shane Bond and Trevor Penney as assistant coaches.

Dravid has a long-standing association with the Jaipur-based franchise. He previously captained the team and served as their mentor during the 2014 and 2015 seasons.

A source quoted by TOI mentioned that talks between RR and Dravid are ongoing, and an announcement is expected soon.

After retiring from international cricket, Dravid coached India’s U-19 and ‘A’ teams before becoming the director of the National Cricket Academy (NCA). He was appointed as India’s head coach in October 2021, succeeding Ravi Shastri.

Under Dravid’s leadership, India reached the finals of the World Test Championship and the ODI World Cup but fell short on both occasions, losing to Australia. However, Dravid concluded his coaching stint on a high note with India winning the T20 World Cup in the Caribbean.

Gautam Gambhir has replaced Dravid as the head coach of the Indian cricket team and will begin his tenure with the white-ball tour of Sri Lanka, starting on July 27.
