BCCI will discuss impact player rule with IPL franchise owners- Report

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and IPL franchise owners are scheduled to meet on July 31 to discuss retentions and other matters ahead of the IPL 2025 auction. A key topic will be the controversial impact player rule.

According to a shared agenda, the BCCI aims to reach a consensus on the ‘Impact Player Rule’ that has divided opinions within the IPL community.

The meeting is set for July 31 at 7:30 pm in the BCCI office at the Wankhede Stadium Complex.

The ‘Impact Player’ regulation, introduced a few years ago, has sparked significant debate. While many within the playing and coaching communities oppose it, broadcasters, who have invested heavily in the league, support its continuation.

The BCCI remains undecided, which is why the topic is included in the meeting agenda. Board officials recognize that the rule allows for an additional Indian player but worry it may hinder the development of all-rounders, essential to team success.

The BCCI is considering removing the rule from the Syed Mushtaq Ali domestic T20 competition, where it was first tested.

The meeting agenda includes:

1. Discussion on IPL Player Regulations:
– Player Retention / Right to Match
– Salary Cap (Auction Purse, Incremental Performance Pay & Match Fee)
– Big Auction
– Capped to uncapped players
– Player Trade / Player Loan

2. Overseas Players

3. Discussion on the Impact Player Rule

4. IPL Gaming rights

5. IPL Central Merchandising

6. Other business matters related to the IPL
