BCCI secretary Jay Shah denies reports of approaching any former Australian cricketer for India head coach

Earlier this month, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) began the search for a new head coach for the Indian cricket team. Rahul Dravid, the current chief coach, will see his term end after the T20 World Cup in the West Indies and USA next month.

Reports indicate that Dravid is unlikely to seek an extension, suggesting that the Indian team will have a new head coach following the T20 World Cup 2024.

Several prominent figures have emerged as potential successors to Rahul Dravid, including Ricky Ponting, with reports suggesting the former Australia captain was contacted by the Indian board.

However, on Friday (May 24), BCCI secretary Jay Shah dismissed these reports, stating that no former Australian cricketer had been approached for the position of Team India’s head coach.

Shah emphasized the importance of the head coach having a comprehensive understanding of India’s domestic cricket scene.

“Neither I nor the BCCI have reached out to any former Australian cricketer with a coaching offer. The reports in certain media outlets are entirely inaccurate. Selecting the right coach for our national team is a careful and detailed process. We are committed to finding candidates who deeply understand the Indian cricket system and have progressed through it. It is essential that our coach has a thorough knowledge of our domestic cricket framework to effectively elevate Team India,” Jay Shah said in a statement.

“Being the head coach of the Indian cricket team is one of the most prestigious roles in international cricket. Team India has the largest global fan base, with unparalleled support. This rich history and passion make it one of the most coveted jobs worldwide. The role demands a high level of professionalism, as it involves mentoring some of the world’s best cricketers and a continuous stream of emerging talent. Meeting the expectations of a billion fans is a great honor, and the BCCI will select the right candidate to advance Indian cricket,” he added.

Rahul Dravid was appointed as chief coach in November 2021 for a two-year term, which concluded after last year’s 50-over World Cup. He and his support staff were then extended until the T20 World Cup 2024.

The BCCI’s advertisement for the next head coach specifies a tenure from July 1, 2024, to December 31, 2027, with the application deadline set for May 27.

The selection process will include a comprehensive review of applications, followed by personal interviews and evaluations of shortlisted candidates.
