India tour of Sri Lanka 2024: Indian star Rohit, Kohli and other ODI squad members land in Colombo; Batting coach Abhishek Nayar to oversee net session
India skipper Rohit Sharma has arrived in Sri Lanka for the upcoming ODI series. He is joined by Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Kuldeep Yadav, and Harshit Rana, who have also reached the island nation. The players are believed to have checked into the ITC Ratnadipa Hotel in Colombo on Sunday night, July 28.
A report from Cricbuzz indicates that the ODI squad members will participate in a net session at the stadium on Monday, July 29.
The Indian team management has appointed Abhishek Nayar to oversee the training session in Colombo. Nayar, one of the assistant coaches working under head coach Gautam Gambhir, headed to Colombo on Monday morning following India’s series-clinching win in the second T20I against Sri Lanka in Pallekele on Sunday night.
Other members of the ODI squad will join Rohit Sharma and his teammates after the third and final T20I in Pallekele on Tuesday, July 30.
The ODI series between India and Sri Lanka is set to begin on August 2, with all three matches scheduled to be played at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
According to the report, former South African fast bowler Morne Morkel is expected to join the Indian coaching staff as a bowling coach. His tenure is anticipated to start with the home Test series against Bangladesh in September.
During the current tour of Sri Lanka, former India all-rounder Abhishek Nayar and ex-Dutch player Ryan ten Doeschate are traveling with the Indian team as assistant coaches. T Dilip, who is also in Sri Lanka with the national team, has been retained as a fielding coach due to his effective performance under former coach Rahul Dravid.
It remains uncertain whether Sairaj Bahutule, who is currently serving as an interim bowling coach on the Lanka tour, will continue after Morkel’s appointment.
India’s ODI squad includes Rohit Sharma (captain), Shubman Gill (vice-captain), Virat Kohli, KL Rahul (wicketkeeper), Rishabh Pant (wicketkeeper), Shreyas Iyer, Shivam Dube, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj, Washington Sundar, Arshdeep Singh, Riyan Parag, Axar Patel, Khaleel Ahmed, and Harshit Rana.
