On Tuesday, November 7, Shakib Al Hasan was officially ruled out of the remaining matches in Bangladesh’s CWC 2023 campaign due to a fractured index finger on his left hand. This injury occurred while Shakib was batting during his team’s penultimate league stage match against Sri Lanka in Delhi on November 6.
After the game, an X-ray examination confirmed the fracture, and as a result, the all-rounder won’t be able to participate in Bangladesh’s final match of the tournament against Australia in Pune on November 11.
According to Bangladesh team physio Bayjedul Islam Khan, “Shakib was struck on his left index finger early in his innings but continued to bat with supportive taping and painkillers.” Khan added, “He underwent an emergency X-ray in Delhi after the game, which confirmed the fracture on the left PIP joint. Recovery is estimated to take three to four weeks. He will return to Bangladesh today to commence his rehabilitation.”
Bangladesh, having lost six out of their eight games, is already out of the World Cup semi-final contention. Nevertheless, their final league match against Australia holds importance, considering the 2025 Champions Trophy qualification. The International Cricket Council (ICC) recently announced that the top seven teams in the World Cup’s league stage would secure a spot in the next Champions Trophy, along with the host nation, Pakistan. Bangladesh currently holds the seventh position on the 10-team points table.
In terms of Shakib’s performance in this World Cup, the Bangladesh captain concluded the campaign with 186 runs and 9 wickets from seven matches.
