CWC 2023: Angelo Mathews Become First Batsman to Timed Out in International Cricket

In the ongoing CWC 2023 2023 match in Delhi, Sri Lanka’s Angelo Mathews made history, although not in a favorable way, as he became the first batsman ever to be declared ‘timed out’ in international cricket.

Bangladesh won the toss and chose to field first. Sri Lanka faced an early setback when Kusal Perera was dismissed for just 4 runs. Captain Kusal Mendis contributed 19 runs before Shakib Al Hasan removed him. The duo of Pathum Nissanka (41) and Sadeera Samarawickrama (41) attempted to stabilize the innings, but Tanzim Hasan dismissed Nissanka, and Shakib accounted for Samarawickrama.

The incident involving Angelo Mathews being ‘timed out’ is governed by the following cricket law:

40.1.1: “After the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batsman, the incoming batsman must, unless Time has been called, be ready to receive the ball or for the other batsman to be ready to receive the next ball within 2 minutes of the dismissal or retirement. If this requirement is not met, the incoming batsman will be declared ‘Timed out.'”

40.1.2: “In the event of an extended delay in which no batsman comes to the wicket, the umpires shall adopt the procedure of Law 16.3 (Umpires awarding a match). For that Law, the start of the action shall be taken as the expiry of the 3 minutes referred to above.
