England Cricket Board might be gearing up for IPL reunion as Kumar Sangakkara probably to join as white-ball head coach: Report
England’s white-ball cricket team has faced a difficult year. They performed poorly at the Cricket World Cup 2023 in India, finishing seventh out of ten teams with only three wins from nine matches.
In the T20 World Cup held in the Caribbean and USA last month, England, led by Jos Buttler, made it to the semi-finals but only managed to beat one Test-playing nation, the West Indies, during the tournament.
Following these setbacks, England is planning changes in their coaching staff. Current white-ball head coach Matthew Mott is expected to leave next week.
Reports indicate that England will retain Buttler as the limited-overs captain. However, his coach at Rajasthan Royals, Kumar Sangakkara, is a leading candidate for the head coach position.
According to The Telegraph UK, Sangakkara is a strong contender to replace Mott as the head coach of England’s white-ball teams.
Buttler has developed a good rapport with Sangakkara during their time together at the Royals in the IPL.
Other candidates for the role include former Australia batter Michael Hussey and Afghanistan head coach Jonathan Trott.
Trott has led Afghanistan to notable successes, including a sixth-place finish in the 2023 World Cup and reaching the semi-finals of the 2024 T20 World Cup.
Hussey has an impressive coaching background, having served as the batting coach for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL and as a batting coach for the England team from 2022 to 2023.
The report also mentions that former England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff is unlikely to be considered for the head coach role.
