ICC Sets Champions Trophy Window for Feb-Mar; Uncertainty Over India’s Participation in Pakistan – Report
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has reportedly scheduled the Champions Trophy 2025 tournament to be held in Pakistan. According to Cricbuzz, the window for the tournament is from February 19 to March 9.
Sources from various cricket boards and the ICC have confirmed the 20-day period for the eight-team competition, marking its return since the last edition in 2017, where Pakistan triumphed over India in the final at The Oval.
The tournament will fit into this 20-day window, with the detailed schedule to be announced later. The dates fall from a Wednesday, February 19, to a Sunday, March 9. For comparison, the 2017 edition spanned 19 days, starting on June 1 and concluding on June 18.
These proposed dates have been shared with member boards to allow them to adjust their league schedules. For instance, the IL T20 will hold its third edition from January 11 to February 9, overlapping with the SA20’s third season from January 9 to February 8.
A significant issue remains whether India will travel to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy 2025. With the current political climate, it’s uncertain if all matches will take place in Pakistan. The hybrid model used for the previous Asia Cup, which involved hosting some matches in the UAE, might be considered again.
An ICC source told Cricbuzz that more clarity is expected at the ICC’s annual convention in Colombo in July. By then, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) should have a clearer understanding of the government’s stance on the competition.
Cricbuzz also reported that the PCB plans to designate Lahore as the venue for India’s matches to minimize travel for the Indian team and facilitate fan access via the Wagah border.
