IPL 2024: “You have to evolve with times,” Ravi Shastri calls for continuation of Impact Player rule in IPL amid debate
India’s captain, Rohit Sharma, raised concerns recently regarding the ‘Impact Player’ rule, suggesting that it might be inhibiting the performance of all-rounders in the current IPL season. Since then, several present and former players have voiced their support for Rohit’s stance.
The Impact Player rule was introduced during IPL 2023, allowing each team to designate up to four substitute players alongside their primary playing XI at the toss. One of these substitutes can replace a member of the original XI during the match, earning the title of Impact Player.
Amidst the ongoing debate, former India head coach Ravi Shastri has lent his support to the Impact Player rule, citing its role in creating thrilling finishes in IPL 2024.
Shastri remarked, “The Impact Player rule is a positive addition. Adapting to changing times is crucial, as seen in various other sports. It has led to tighter and more exciting finishes. The increased number of closely contested matches in the previous IPL season is a testament to its effectiveness.”
He continued, “With any new rule, there will always be skepticism initially. However, as evidenced by high-scoring games and individual performances seizing opportunities, perspectives are likely to evolve over time.”
Meanwhile, BCCI secretary Jay Shah has refrained from confirming the continuation of the Impact Player rule in the Indian Premier League, suggesting that a decision will be made after consulting with team captains and coaches.
Shah explained, “The Impact Player rule serves as a trial run. We have gradually introduced it, with one significant advantage being the increased opportunities for Indian players in each match. We will evaluate its impact on the competitiveness of the game after consulting with various stakeholders, including players, franchises, and broadcasters. While it’s not a permanent fixture, its fate will depend on whether it enhances the competitiveness of the league. Ultimately, if players express concerns, we will address them accordingly. However, no such feedback has been received thus far, so a final decision will be made post the World Cup.”
