IPL 2024: Cricket fraternity reacts as Mumbai Indians open their account in IPL 17 by defeating DC by 29 runs

On April 7, at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, the Mumbai Indians (MI) and Delhi Capitals (DC) clashed in the 20th match of the ongoing IPL 2024 season. MI, seeking their first win, squared off against DC, also eager for a victory.

After winning the toss, DC skipper Rishabh Pant elected to field first. Rohit Sharma (49) and Ishan Kishan (42) provided a solid start, amassing 80 runs in the initial 7 overs. Hardik Pandya’s contribution of 39 runs further bolstered MI’s total, allowing them to regain momentum.

However, in the death overs, Tim David (45* off 21 balls, including two fours and four sixes) and Romario Shepherd unleashed a flurry of boundaries against the DC bowling attack. Shepherd, particularly, decimated Anrich Nortje in MI’s final over, plundering 32 runs, including four towering sixes, to finish unbeaten on 39* from just 10 balls.

MI concluded their innings at 234/5 from their allotted 20 overs. Nortje conceded 65 runs and claimed 2 wickets, while Akshar Patel picked up 2 wickets for 35 runs.

After David Warner departed having scored ten runs, Prithvi Shaw (66 runs, featuring eight fours and three sixes) and Abishek Porel (41 runs) aggressively took on the MI spinners. Together, they accumulated 88 runs for the second wicket partnership.

However, Shaw, anticipating a substantial innings, was caught off guard by the brilliance of Jasprit Bumrah. Shortly after, Porel fell victim to Bumrah, marking Bumrah’s 150th IPL wicket.

Despite Tristan Stubbs’ valiant effort, scoring an unbeaten 71 runs off 25 balls with seven sixes and three fours, DC could only muster 205/8 in their allotted 20 overs, falling short by 29 runs. Gerald Coetzee claimed 4 wickets for 34 runs, while Jasprit Bumrah contributed with 2 wickets for 22 runs, aiding MI in clinching their first victory in IPL 2024.

Romario Shepherd was awarded the Player of the Match title.

The cricketing community showered praise on Mumbai Indians’ pacer Jasprit Bumrah and commended the team’s performance across various social media platforms.
