IPL 2024: BCCI to implement Smart Replay System to enhance accuracy and expedite decision-making, states report
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) reportedly plans to introduce the Smart Replay System during the upcoming IPL 2024 season. This initiative aims to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of decision-making processes.
The Smart Replay System entails the utilization of Hawk-Eye technology, where two operators will be stationed alongside the TV umpire. These operators will furnish real-time images captured by eight high-speed Hawk-Eye cameras strategically positioned around the ground.
Each match will feature eight Hawk-Eye cameras, with two positioned on each side of the square leg and two along each side of the pitch’s straight boundaries.
“The TV broadcast director, who until now was a conduit between the third umpire and the Hawk-Eye operators, will no longer be involved under the new system,” the ESPNCricinfo report stated.
The Smart Replay System is poised to offer the TV umpire access to an expanded array of visuals, including split-screen images. This enhancement will provide the umpire with a broader perspective compared to their previous limitations.
Previously, the broadcaster faced limitations in presenting a split-screen view capturing both the fielder’s feet and hands precisely at the moment of catching the ball. However, with the introduction of the new system, such split-screen visuals are now feasible, enabling the umpire to assess the catch or release moment alongside synchronized footage of the fielder’s feet.
Furthermore, the innovative technology will incorporate TV umpire tri-vision for stumpings, amalgamating single frames from side-on and front-on cameras for comprehensive analysis.
Conversations between the TV umpire and Hawk-Eye operator are anticipated to be broadcasted live, offering viewers insights into decision-making processes.
According to ESPNcricinfo, BCCI organized a two-day workshop in Mumbai to familiarize selected umpires with the new system.
Approximately 15 umpires, including both Indian and overseas officials, are slated to officiate matches equipped with the Smart Replay System during IPL 2024, commencing on March 22nd.
