IPL 2024: Changes in IPL Playing Conditions incorporate the allowance of two bouncers per over and the introduction of the Smart Replay System
In the upcoming 2024 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), bowlers will now have the privilege of delivering two bouncers in an over. This change in the IPL Playing Conditions follows a trial of the two-bouncer per over rule during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2023-24, India’s domestic T20 tournament.
Previously, bowlers were restricted to bowling just one bouncer per over, with any additional delivery above shoulder height considered a no-ball. However, the updated regulations now permit bowlers to deliver two bouncers per over, provided they remain within the batter’s reach to avoid being called a wide.
Additionally, for the IPL 2024 season, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has opted to maintain the rule regarding the verification of a catch during stumpings review. This differs from ICC regulations, where stumping calls are solely reviewed by the on-field umpire.
Similar to the previous season, teams in the upcoming IPL will be granted two reviews, along with the ability to review wides and no balls.
In contrast to the ICC, the BCCI has opted not to implement the stop clock rule for the forthcoming IPL season. This rule, which aims to ensure the timely conduct of proceedings, will not be enforced.
Among the alterations to the IPL Playing Conditions is the introduction of the Smart Replay System. This system aims to enhance the speed and accuracy of decision-making by allowing the TV umpire to directly receive inputs from two operators of the Hawk-Eye system seated alongside them in the same room.
This system seeks to provide comprehensive visual data for precise assessments. According to ESPNCricinfo, the role of the TV broadcast director, who previously acted as a mediator between the umpire and the Hawk-Eye operators, will become redundant with this revamped setup.
The IPL 2024 season is scheduled to commence on March 22nd. In the tournament opener at Chepauk, defending champions Chennai Super Kings are set to face Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
