Indian middle order batsmen Shreyas Iyer to play for Mumbai in Buchi Babu Tophy ahead of Bangladesh Test series, confirms MCA
Shreyas Iyer is set to participate in the Buchi Babu tournament as part of his preparation for India’s Test series against Bangladesh, according to a statement from the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) on August 13. Iyer will represent Mumbai in their match against Jammu and Kashmir, starting August 27 in Coimbatore.
India will face Bangladesh in a two-Test series at home, beginning September 19. The first Test will take place in Chennai, followed by the second in Kanpur from October 1.
Having lost his central contract, Iyer will be eager to perform well in the Buchi Babu tournament to make a strong case for selection in the squad for the Bangladesh series.
The MCA statement confirmed, “Shreyas Iyer will compete for Mumbai in the Buchi Babu Invitational tournament, with their match against Jammu & Kashmir scheduled to start on August 27, 2024, in Coimbatore.”
In a May interview, Iyer shared his struggle with back issues, which led to his loss of a central contract. He expressed frustration over the lack of understanding from management and emphasized his commitment to perform well in the IPL with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
Iyer last appeared in a Test for India against England in Vizag in 2024. To date, he has amassed 811 runs in 14 Tests, with an average of 38.86, including one century and five half-centuries.
