New appointed head coach of India Gautam Gambhir yet to sign BCCI contract; salary estimated to be in same range as Rahul Dravid’s- Report
Gautam Gambhir was appointed as the new head coach of Team India on July 7, 2024, by the BCCI. He will be succeeding Rahul Dravid, whose tenure concluded with India’s victory in the T20 World Cup 2024.
Gambhir’s first assignment will be the white-ball tour of Sri Lanka later this month, where India is scheduled to play three ODIs and three T20Is.
However, Gambhir has yet to sign the contract with the BCCI as discussions regarding his salary are still in progress. The BCCI is expected to finalize his contract soon, with his salary anticipated to be comparable to that of Rahul Dravid.
A BCCI source mentioned, “For Gautam, he needed to take charge, and salary and other stuff can be worked out as it’s not going anywhere. It is similar to the case of Ravi Shastri in 2014 when he was first made Director of Cricket over head coach Duncan Fletcher. The day Ravi joined, he didn’t even have a contract and things worked out. In the case of Gautam also, some finer details are being worked out. The salary will be in the same range as Rahul Dravid.”
Gambhir has proposed Abhishek Nayar for the assistant coach role and R Vinay Kumar for the bowling coach position. However, the BCCI is also considering Zaheer Khan and L Balaji for the bowling coach role.
Regarding the fielding coach, Jonty Rhodes’ name has come up again, but the BCCI typically prefers selecting home-grown talent for this position.
