T20 World Champions Team India set to meet PM Narendra Modi in in PM house; Open bus victory parade planned in Mumbai
Rohit Sharma’s T20 World Cup 2024 winning Indian team is set to receive a grand welcome upon their return to India. The team had been stuck in Barbados since June 29 due to Hurricane Beryl.
The Indian cricketers, their families, the coaching staff, BCCI officials, and sports journalists will return home via a special flight arranged by the BCCI.
The airport in Barbados became operational on Tuesday night (IST), but the Indian team had to wait for the Air India special charter flight named AIC24WC — Air India Champions 24 World Cup — to arrive.
Fans can track the plane on flight radar websites. The flight, which took off from New Jersey, USA on July 2, arrived at Grantley Adams International Airport in Barbados around 2 a.m. local time. It then departed at approximately 4:50 a.m. local time and is scheduled to land in New Delhi around 6:20 a.m. (IST) on Thursday.
The team was initially supposed to leave at 6 p.m. local time on July 2 and arrive at 7:45 p.m. (IST) on Wednesday, but the trip was delayed due to the late arrival of the plane.
Upon landing, the players will meet PM Modi around 9:30 a.m. The felicitation event is expected to last a few hours, after which the players will depart for Mumbai on another chartered airplane.
According to India Today, the team will drive from Mumbai airport to Wankhede Stadium, with the last kilometer being an open bus parade. A presentation ceremony at the Wankhede Stadium will see captain Rohit Sharma hand over the World Cup trophy to BCCI secretary Jay Shah, and the trophy will remain at BCCI headquarters for the next two years.
Players are expected to leave for their homes starting Thursday. However, a Dainik Jagran journalist mentioned that the open bus parade in Mumbai might take place on Friday due to the long travel from Barbados to Delhi and the ceremony with Prime Minister Modi, which may tire the players.
