T20 World Cup 2024: “Thank you very much for making that call,” Rahul Dravid’s special message for Rohit after India’s T20 World Cup win
Rahul Dravid’s tenure as the head coach of the Indian cricket team culminated in triumph with their victory at the T20 World Cup 2024. The Men in Blue defeated South Africa by seven runs in the final held in Barbados on June 29, ending their long-standing ICC trophy drought.
The final match against South Africa also marked the end of T20I careers for legends Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who announced their retirements from the format, making way for the next generation of players.
After the victory, Dravid delivered an inspiring speech in the dressing room, particularly acknowledging skipper Rohit Sharma. A video shared by the BCCI captured Dravid expressing his immense pride in the team.
“I’m really short of words, but I just want to say thank you to everyone for making me part of this incredible memory. I think all of you will remember these moments. It’s not about the runs or the wickets; you’ll remember moments like this. Let’s really enjoy it. I couldn’t be prouder of you guys,” Dravid stated.
India’s win was a dramatic comeback. Chasing a target of 177, South Africa had reduced the requirement to 30 runs off 30 balls with six wickets in hand. However, the Indian bowlers maintained their composure in the death overs to secure the victory.
“To come back the way you did, to fight as you did, to work as a team – the resilience shown has been amazing. We’ve had disappointments over the years, but this victory is a testament to the hard work and sacrifices made by everyone involved. The whole country is proud of what you’ve achieved,” Dravid added.
Dravid also highlighted the sacrifices made by everyone to achieve this glory. “Seeing your families here enjoying this moment, and thinking of all the sacrifices they’ve made since you were kids for you to be here today – your parents, siblings, children, coaches – it’s a proud moment for all of them too,” he said.
In the end, Dravid thanked Rohit Sharma for convincing him to stay on as head coach until the T20 World Cup 2024. Dravid’s original tenure had ended after the 2023 World Cup, where India lost to Australia in the final.
“Ro, thank you for making that call in November and asking me to continue. It’s been a privilege to work with you and the team. This victory is about the team, not any individual. We won as a team and should celebrate as a team,” Dravid remarked.
Dravid also acknowledged the contributions of the GCCI and everyone working behind the scenes. “Every one of us comes through a system that gives us the opportunities to grow and play. Thank you to everyone involved,” he concluded.
