Hurricane threat delays Indian team departure from Barbados after T20 World Cup 2024 world cup win
The Indian cricket team’s return home after their 2024 T20 World Cup victory has been delayed due to severe weather conditions in Barbados. The hurricane-like situation has led to the suspension of air travel, resulting in the team remaining in their hotels.
Rohit Sharma’s team won the T20 World Cup final against South Africa on Saturday (June 29), ending India’s long ICC trophy drought.
The team was scheduled to fly back to India the following day, but as of Monday (July 1), their return schedule remains uncertain.
A report from India Today states that the Barbados airport has been closed, and all flights have been canceled due to the threat posed by Hurricane Beryl, a Category 4 storm. The severity of the hurricane means that no risks can be taken regarding air travel, and the team’s return cannot be finalized within the next 24 hours.
According to the Washington Post, Hurricane Beryl is expected to impact the Windward Islands with winds over 130 mph. The Hurricane Center has also reported the possibility of a storm surge between 6 to 9 feet and rainfall ranging from 3 to 6 inches.
BCCI secretary Jay Shah mentioned that the board will plan a felicitation ceremony once the team can depart from Barbados to India.
“Like you, we are also stuck here. After the travel plans are clear, we will think about the felicitation,” Shah told PTI.
Additionally, some members of India’s T20 World Cup 2024 squad are set to travel to Zimbabwe for a five-match T20I series starting on July 6 in Harare. The delayed return has disrupted these plans as well.
