‘The biggest question is selectors…’- Former Indian player Dinesh Karthik on Jasprit Bumrah’s potential as India captain

Former Indian cricketer Dinesh Karthik has shared his thoughts on Jasprit Bumrah’s potential to lead the Indian team as captain. With Rohit Sharma stepping down from the T20 format after India’s triumphant T20 World Cup run, there was speculation about Bumrah taking on the captaincy role. Ultimately, however, Suryakumar Yadav, who is Bumrah’s teammate at the Mumbai Indians, was chosen as the T20I captain.

Dinesh Karthik recently shared his views on Jasprit Bumrah’s suitability as India’s captain during a fan interaction on Cricbuzz. He highlighted the importance of managing Bumrah’s fitness for crucial matches and warned that adding the responsibility of captaincy might heighten the risk of injury for the fast bowler.

Karthik addressed a fan question by noting, “Bumrah is calm, composed, and possesses excellent maturity, but as a fast bowler, the key question is how to utilize him across all three formats without overburdening him.”

He further emphasized Bumrah’s value to Indian cricket, likening him to a “Kohinoor diamond” that needs careful management. Karthik stressed that Bumrah’s impact is significant whenever he plays, and overloading him with captaincy responsibilities could lead to increased injury risk, which would be detrimental.

Bumrah has demonstrated his cricketing acumen by leading India in a Test match against England in 2022 and in a three-match T20I series against Ireland.
