Ricky Ponting on BCCI’s radar for India head coach job but ‘three-year’ contract is a concern: Report

The BCCI recently announced fresh openings for the position of head coach for the senior Indian men’s team. Rahul Dravid, the current chief coach, is nearing the end of his term, which concludes after the upcoming T20 World Cup in the West Indies and USA.

Speculations suggest that Dravid is unlikely to reapply for the position, indicating an impending change in leadership post the T20 World Cup 2024. VVS Laxman is also reported to be disinterested in the role due to potential disruptions to his involvement with the National Cricket Academy (NCA), leaving the BCCI in a challenging situation.

Several names have emerged as potential successors to Dravid. Former Australia coach Justin Langer has expressed interest, while reports indicate that the BCCI has informally reached out to CSK coach Stephen Fleming.

Interestingly, the board seems inclined towards hiring an overseas coach this time, a departure from previous preferences. Among the prominent names being considered is Ricky Ponting, renowned for his leadership during Australia’s successful era.

Reports suggest that Ponting has been approached by the BCCI. However, similar to Fleming, Ponting may decline the offer due to the demanding nature of the role, which requires constant travel, particularly considering that Dravid’s successor will be in charge until the 2027 World Cup.

Ponting, with his coaching experience with Delhi Capitals and previous association with Mumbai Indians and the Australian team, brings a wealth of expertise to the table. Despite previous interest from the BCCI, family commitments could pose a challenge to Ponting accepting the role.

It’s worth noting that the Indian team has seen success under foreign coaches like John Wright and Gary Kirsten, although there was a shift towards Indian coaches following an unsuccessful tenure with Duncan Fletcher. Ravi Shastri served multiple terms as head coach before Dravid’s appointment in 2021, continuing the trend of blending Indian and international coaching expertise.
