Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) became the third team in IPL history to win the title three or more times, defeating Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the IPL 2024 final in Chennai on Sunday, May 26.
SRH captain Pat Cummins chose to bat first after winning the toss, and both teams retained their playing XI from the previous match. KKR’s bowlers quickly seized control, with Mitchell Starc dismissing Abhishek Sharma for just two runs. Starc also bowled Rahul Tripathi for nine, while Vaibhav Arora sent Travis Head back for a duck. SRH struggled to recover from these setbacks, with only Aiden Markram (20) and Pat Cummins (24) reaching double figures.
SRH managed to score just 113 runs before being bowled out in 18.3 overs. Andre Russell was the standout bowler for KKR, taking 3/19, while Starc and Harshit Rana each claimed two wickets.
In their chase, KKR lost Sunil Narine early for 6 runs, taken by Pat Cummins, but Rahmanullah Gurbaz (39) and Venkatesh Iyer (52*) ensured a smooth victory. KKR won by 8 wickets with 57 balls to spare, securing their third IPL title, which came a decade after their second.
KKR’s dominance was evident throughout the season, finishing at the top of the points table and winning Qualifier 1. Their impressive performance in the final was celebrated widely by the cricketing community, who took to social media to praise the team’s achievement.
