CWC 2023: Cricket World Reacts as Australia Secures First Victory, Beats Sri Lanka by 5 Wickets
Australia secured their first victory in the ongoing ICC CWC 2023, bouncing back from losses in their initial two matches. They encountered Sri Lanka in the 14th fixture of the tournament at Ekana, Lucknow on October 16, 2023.
Kusal Mendis took on the captaincy for Sri Lanka in place of the injured Dasun Shanaka, winning the toss and choosing to bat first. Pathum Nissanka (61) and Kusal Perera (78) formed a promising opening partnership, adding 125 runs.
However, their batting prowess largely ended there, as Charith Asalanka was the only other player to reach double figures, contributing 25 runs.
Sri Lanka’s innings unraveled with a flurry of wickets, resembling Pakistan’s recent collapse against India. They lost 9 wickets for 84 runs and were eventually bowled out for 209 runs. Adam Zampa was the standout performer for Australia with figures of 4/47, while Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins each secured two wickets.
In Australia’s response, David Warner was dismissed for 11, and Steve Smith registered a duck. However, Mitchell Marsh contributed 52 runs, and Marnus Labuschagne added 40 runs to stabilize the innings. The most impactful performance came from Josh Inglis, who aggressively took on the Sri Lankan bowlers, scoring 58 off 59 balls.
Glenn Maxwell remained unbeaten with 31*, and Marcus Stoinis (20*) swiftly wrapped up the match as Australia clinched victory with 5 wickets in hand and 88 balls to spare. Adam Zampa was recognized as the Player of the Match.

Australia needed a powerful batting performance before their big game against Pakistan. Would have liked Warner and Smith to get more time but Marsh was looking very dangerous. The form of Inglis a big plus. After an insipid start, the bowlers needed to come back and they did…
