‘Desh ke liye karna hai’- Gautam Gambhir as India head coach ‘done deal’ after in depth talks with BCCI- Report
Gautam Gambhir is reportedly in discussions to assume the role of India’s head coach following a discussion with BCCI secretary Jay Shah during the IPL 2024 final. The deadline for applications for the position was May 27, and the list of applicants has not yet been disclosed by the BCCI.
Gambhir, renowned for his leadership skills and his role as mentor for the IPL 2024 champions, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), is believed to be the leading candidate for the head coach role. Rahul Dravid’s tenure as head coach concludes after the T20 World Cup in 2024, and he has declined an extension offer from the BCCI.
The incoming head coach is expected to sign a three-year contract encompassing all formats, extending until the ICC World Cup 2027.
Gambhir’s leadership track record includes leading KKR to IPL titles in 2012 and 2014 as captain, and most recently guiding them to victory in 2024 as mentor. He also served as mentor for Lucknow Super Giants, who reached the playoffs in IPL 2022 and 2023.
Reports suggest that Gambhir’s appointment is highly probable, with negotiations ongoing on various fronts. According to sources cited by Cricbuzz, negotiations are progressing, with significant figures expressing confidence in Gambhir’s appointment.
The focus within the coaching selection process is reportedly on serving the nation’s cricketing interests, with both the BCCI and Gambhir sharing a commitment to this principle. Discussions between Jay Shah and Gambhir are said to revolve around this shared vision.
These developments come in the wake of denials from Jay Shah regarding BCCI’s purported approaches to former Australian cricketers for the head coach position.
Gambhir is said to be contemplating the offer, with even Shah Rukh Khan reportedly aware of the discussions. While the deadline for applications has passed, Gambhir’s submission is anticipated, although official confirmation is pending.
