Cricket’s Inclusion in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games Approved by International Olympic Committee
The Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games are set to witness cricket’s return, marking only the second occurrence of the sport in the history of the Games. The decision to include cricket received approval from the International Olympic Committee’s executive and was officially announced on Friday, October 13, 2023.
Cricket made its inaugural appearance at the Olympics in 1900 in Paris, featuring as one of the 18 sports at the time. The final saw Great Britain emerging victorious against France, in a single match contested after the withdrawal of the Netherlands and Belgium.
IOC President Thomas Bach revealed that the proposal put forth by LA organizers to introduce T20 cricket, the sport’s shortest-established international format, was accepted. This decision also adds four other sports to the roster: baseball/softball, flag football (non-contact American football), squash, and lacrosse.
To secure their place in the 2028 Games, these sports will undergo a voting process by the IOC membership. The outcome of this vote is expected to be determined in a ballot scheduled for Monday, marking a significant step in shaping the future of the Olympic Games.
