BCCI has summoned a meeting of IPL team owners on April 16, potentially to address matters concerning the mega auction and player retentions, according to reports
The Indian Premier League (IPL) team owners are scheduled to convene for a meeting on April 16 under the auspices of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
Simultaneously, Gujarat Titans will be competing against Delhi Capitals at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
A Cricbuzz report has disclosed that invitations have been dispatched to all 10 owners of the IPL franchises.
BCCI President Roger Binny, Secretary Jay Shah, and IPL Chairman Arun Singh Dhumal are expected to participate in the meeting. IPL CEO Hemang Amin is believed to have issued the communication regarding the gathering.
The agenda of the meeting purportedly includes deliberations on various policy decisions, chiefly concerning the forthcoming mega-auction preceding next year’s IPL.
An insider familiar with the matter, as cited by Cricbuzz, stated, “They will discuss the way forward for the IPL.”
The number of player retentions before the auction is anticipated to be a key point of contention. While unanimity on the retention number remains elusive, the Indian board is reportedly aiming to negotiate a resolution.
During the previous mega-auction in 2022, teams were permitted to retain a maximum of four players. Presently, some franchise owners advocate for increasing the retention count, arguing that teams have solidified their positions and require continuity to bolster their brand and fan base.
Conversely, another faction opposes such a high retention count. Additionally, there are talks about reintroducing the Right to Match card, which formerly allowed teams to match the highest bid for a player from their squad in the previous season, thereby securing his services once again.
Among the topics slated for discussion in the meeting, the salary cap holds prominence. In the preceding mini-auction, the cap was fixed at INR 100 crore. However, it is expected to escalate, given the substantial surge in the teams’ central revenue share subsequent to the BCCI’s sealing of a lucrative INR 48,390 crore broadcast deal two years ago.
