Mumbai Indians (MI) convincingly defeated Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the 25th match of the IPL 2024 held on April 11 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
The toss was won by Hardik Pandya, who elected for MI to bowl first. Despite losing three early wickets, including those of Virat Kohli (3) and Glenn Maxwell (0), RCB managed to recover, mainly due to an 82-run partnership between Faf du Plessis and Rajat Patidar.
Faf du Plessis scored 61 runs, featuring four fours and three sixes, while Rajat Patidar contributed 50 runs, including four sixes and three fours, setting a solid foundation for Dinesh Karthik to accelerate in the later overs. Karthik’s aggressive innings of 53* off just 23 deliveries propelled RCB to a total of 196/8.
Jasprit Bumrah emerged as the standout performer among the MI bowlers, finishing with figures of 5/21.
MI’s response was emphatic as openers Ishan Kishan and Rohit Sharma launched a blistering assault on the RCB bowlers. Kishan led the charge, smashing 69 runs off just 34 deliveries, including 7 fours and 5 sixes. The opening duo put on 101 runs for the first wicket in a mere 8.5 overs.
Rohit Sharma contributed 38 runs off 24 balls, featuring three fours and three sixes, before being dismissed. However, the onslaught continued as Suryakumar Yadav took over, pulverizing the RCB bowling attack.
Yadav’s explosive innings of 52 runs from just 19 balls, comprising 5 fours and 4 sixes, further demoralized the RCB bowlers. Hardik Pandya (21*) and Tilak Varma (16*) then guided MI to victory, reaching the target with 7 wickets in hand and 15.3 overs to spare.
The cricketing community lauded MI’s batting display, recognizing it as a commendable performance.
