AUS v WI 2024: VIEW – Khawaja forced to retire hurt following a painful blow; no sign of jaw fracture but under Australia’s monitoring

Australia’s opening batsman, Usman Khawaja, endured a painful blow to his chin during the second innings of the initial Test against West Indies at Adelaide. Despite the low target of 26 runs, Australia secured a decisive 10-wicket victory.

Khawaja, however, had to prematurely leave the match after sustaining a blow to his chin from Shamar Joseph’s delivery when he was at 9 runs. The 37-year-old displayed signs of distress, including spitting blood and tending to his jaw before departing the field.

Although Khawaja cleared the initial concussion tests, he underwent further medical examination. A follow-up assessment is scheduled for Saturday to ensure his well-being.

In the meantime, Cricket Australia provided an update on Usman Khawaja’s condition, stating that he has been ruled out of any fractures but will be under ongoing observation.

“UPDATE: Usman Khawaja has been cleared of a fractured jaw but continues to be monitored for concussion symptoms,” Cricket Australia posted.

He seemed okay, just a little bit of a sore jaw. We’ll monitor it, but he seemed okay,” Australia captain Pat Cummins said post match.

The upcoming day-night test in Brisbane is set to commence on Thursday, marking the second and final match.

West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite expressed regret, stating, “Unfortunately, he bit his tongue as well. Let’s hope he’s okay; no one wants to see a guy get injured playing this game that we love.”

In the event of Khawaja’s absence, Matthew Renshaw is the probable replacement in Brisbane.

Usman Khawaja also took to Instagram to share gratitude, thanking everyone for their concern.
