BCCI and IPL franchise owners will meet on July 31; retentions, Right to Match Cards in mega auction to be discussed- Report

The highly anticipated meeting between IPL franchise owners and the BCCI is scheduled for July 31. Although the venue has not been officially disclosed, it is expected to be held at the BCCI headquarters in the Wankhede Stadium complex in Mumbai.

Cricbuzz reported that IPL CEO Hemang Amin confirmed the meeting date to franchise owners via text messages on July 25, 2024. Amin also mentioned that a formal invite, detailing the venue and timing, would follow.

The meeting is likely to take place in the late afternoon or evening on July 31, with all owners expected to attend.

Key topics on the agenda include determining retentions and the number of Right-to-Match (RTM) cards before the IPL 2025 super auction, as well as discussing the auction purse amount. Franchise owners currently retain between zero to eight players, but several teams have suggested reducing retentions and increasing RTM cards.

Additionally, there will be discussions about the salary cap, which is expected to be around INR 120 crore for the first year of the next three-year cycle. The retention value of players will also be addressed, with the salary of top retainers previously being about 16-17 percent of the wage ceiling.

While the exact number of player retentions per team is still uncertain, it is anticipated that the BCCI will agree on an average of five or six. Limiting retentions is believed to maintain excitement for the auction, as retaining too many players could exclude top talent from the process.
