MS Dhoni to wait for a couple of months before taking call on his IPL future – Report

MS Dhoni’s quickfire 25 off 13 balls wasn’t enough as Chennai Super Kings (CSK) fell to a 27-run loss against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the crucial IPL 2024 playoffs qualifier on Sunday, May 18.

Chasing a challenging target of 219, CSK came close thanks to a late surge by Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja. Needing 17 runs in the final over, Dhoni hit a massive six off the first ball. However, RCB’s Yash Dayal held his nerve, leading to RCB’s win.

Dhoni’s 100-meter six resulted in the ball being replaced, and he was dismissed on the next delivery while attempting another big hit. A senior CSK official noted that the replacement ball, being drier, made it harder to hit .

Prior to the season opener, Dhoni stepped down as CSK captain, passing the leadership to Ruturaj Gaikwad, sparking speculation about his future with the team. According to sources, Dhoni has not made any final decisions about his retirement and will decide after a few months .

Despite a calf injury, Dhoni had an impressive season, scoring 161 runs at an average of 53.66 and a striking rate of 220.54 across 11 innings. His performance was not hindered by his injury, particularly his running between the wickets .

With a mega-auction approaching next season, CSK might retain a maximum of five players. Likely candidates include Ruturaj Gaikwad, Jadeja, Shivam Dube, and Matheesha Pathirana. Dhoni could opt for a lower retention slot to allow for strategic acquisitions during the auction .

Dhoni’s decision may also hinge on whether the ‘impact player’ rule, which allows him to bat in the final overs without extensive running, will continue. If the rule is abolished, retaining Dhoni might be less advantageous for the team. A CSK official mentioned that Dhoni’s future decisions would prioritize the team’s best interests .
