IPL 2024: “The captain had been stagnant”- Rohit Sharma opens up on Mumbai Indians captaincy change
Rohit Sharma, the former captain of the Mumbai Indians (MI), recently spoke out for the first time since stepping down as the skipper of the team prior to IPL 2024. The decision by the franchise management to appoint Hardik Pandya as the new captain came after his trade-in from the Gujarat Titans.
However, the transition has been challenging for Hardik Pandya, with some MI fans showing reluctance to accept him as the new captain. Additionally, Mumbai Indians suffered defeats in their first three matches, with Pandya facing criticism from fans, including at their home ground, Wankhede Stadium.
Subsequently, Mumbai Indians managed to secure victories in two consecutive matches against Delhi Capitals and Royal Challengers Bangalore. However, their winning streak was interrupted by a loss to the Chennai Super Kings at the Wankhede Stadium.
Rohit Sharma assumed the role of MI captain during the 2013 IPL season, leading the team to their first-ever IPL championship victory. Under his leadership, the franchise claimed four more titles in the years 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020.
