IND v AUS 2023: “Once I got his wicket the belief came…,” Arshdeep Singh on Saving the match with Final Over Heroics
Arshdeep Singh delivered a thrilling final over, defending 10 runs to secure a nail-biting six-run victory for India over Australia in the fifth and final T20I at Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru on Sunday (December 3rd).
The left-arm pacer, despite leaking 37 runs in his first three overs, held his nerve when it mattered most. Tasked with the challenging final six deliveries, he conceded just three runs and snagged the crucial wicket of Matthew Wade (22 off 15), restricting Australia to 154/8 in pursuit of India’s 161.
Revealing his mindset after the game, Arshdeep admitted feeling the pressure. “I wasn’t confident about the conditions after bowling some loose deliveries,” he confessed in the post-match press conference.
However, skipper Suryakumar Yadav’s unwavering belief instilled confidence in the young bowler. “Surya bhai told me to bowl whatever I wanted in the death overs and assured me of his full support,” Arshdeep shared. “Sometimes, he even offered suggestions, like ‘this kind of ball might be effective here.'”
Arshdeep’s over started with a debatable bouncer, initially called a no-ball for height before the umpire reversed the decision. He then followed up with a pinpoint yorker before dismissing the dangerous Wade with a clever delivery.
“That wicket was the turning point,” Arshdeep declared. “I realized I had nothing to lose after giving away so many runs. Surya bhai also kept saying, ‘Let’s see how it goes.’ My instinct told me to start with a bouncer to unsettle Wade, and once he was gone, I knew we could win this.”
The youngster heaped praise on Suryakumar’s captaincy throughout the series. “Surya bhai gives us incredible freedom,” he stated. “He reminded us that even though the pitches weren’t ideal, challenges also bring opportunities.”
“He emphasized process over results, urging us to focus on making them score off good balls and never pressured us,” Arshdeep elaborated. “He told me to bowl whatever I thought was best in the death overs and assured me of his complete support.”
With the South Africa tour looming next week, Arshdeep maintained their focus remained solely on the present. “Right now, this series is our priority,” he asserted. “We’re not looking beyond it. Once we’re there and assess the conditions, we’ll make plans accordingly.”
