Shubman Gill and Mohammed Siraj Reach No. 1 Spot in the Latest ICC ODI Rankings, Ending Babar Azam and Shaheen Afridi’s Reign
Shubman Gill and Mohammed Siraj of India have surged to the pinnacle of the latest ICC ODI player rankings due to their exceptional performances in the ongoing ICC World Cup 2023.
Shubman Gill’s impressive start to India’s campaign in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 has brought an end to Babar Azam’s two-year reign as the top-ranked ODI batsman. This achievement places Gill in an elite group, making him the fourth Indian batsman to claim the No. 1 spot for ODI batters, alongside the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni, and Virat Kohli.
During the past week, the right-handed batsman has accumulated 219 runs from six innings at the World Cup, including a noteworthy 92 against Sri Lanka and 23 against South Africa.
In contrast, Babar Azam has faced a challenging campaign in the ongoing World Cup, amassing 282 runs from eight innings. This decline has pushed him six rating points below Shubman Gill.
Virat Kohli, not to be outdone, also demonstrated significant movement in the rankings, ascending three places to occupy the fourth position. He stands just one rating point behind the third-placed South African, Quinton de Kock. Kohli’s impressive World Cup performance includes 543 runs in eight matches, featuring two centuries and four half-centuries.
Shreyas Iyer has also made a notable jump in the rankings, advancing seventeen places to the 18th spot on the list of ODI batters. Other batters who have made substantial progress include Pakistan’s opener Fakhar Zaman (up three places to 11th) and Afghanistan’s Ibrahim Zadran (up six places to 12th).
In addition to Mohammed Siraj’s ascent, Kuldeep Yadav (up three places to fourth), Jasprit Bumrah (up three spots to eighth), and Mohammed Shami (up seven places to 10th) have all secured positions within the top 10 among ODI bowlers.
Further ranking shifts include South Africa’s spinner Keshav Maharaj (up two places to second) and Australia’s counterpart Adam Zampa (up six places to third) within the top 10 rankings.
