CWC 2023: “I Never Anticipated This Day” – David Willey Announces Retirement from International Cricket

On November 1, 2023, English fast bowler David Willey officially announced his retirement from all forms of international cricket through a social media post. He mentioned that the ongoing CWC 2023 would be his final assignment representing the England team.

Willey played a significant role in England’s transition to white-ball cricket and notably emerged as the highest wicket-taker for England during the 2016 T20 World Cup in India. He was also included in the provisional England squad for the 2019 World Cup but was eventually left out to make room for Jofra Archer.

At the age of 33, the pacer has chosen to conclude his international career, particularly in light of the ECB’s decision not to offer him a central contract for the 2023-24 cycle. Interestingly, Willey was the lone member of England’s 2023 World Cup squad who was absent from the list of 26 central contracts revealed in Bangalore the previous week.

In the ICC World Cup 2023, Willey shone brightly for England, contributing with five wickets at an average of 27.20 and scoring 42 runs. However, it has been a challenging campaign for England, having suffered losses in five out of the six matches they’ve played so far.
