“I am very confident…”: Indian pacer Arshdeep Singh reveals he is working hard to become a reliable lower-order batter

Left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh played a crucial role in India’s seven-wicket victory over the USA at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York on Wednesday (June 12).

Choosing to bowl first, India limited the USA to 110/8 in 20 overs. Arshdeep was instrumental with the ball, taking four wickets for just nine runs in his four-over spell—setting a record for the best bowling figures by an Indian in the T20 World Cup.

In response, India faced early difficulties on a challenging pitch, finding themselves at 39/3. However, Suryakumar Yadav’s unbeaten half-century and Shivam Dube’s steady 31* guided India to victory with 10 balls to spare.

This win marked India’s third consecutive triumph in the tournament, securing their place in the Super 8 stage.

After the match, Arshdeep Singh expressed his desire to improve his batting skills, working diligently with batting coach Vikram Rathour to become a dependable lower-order batsman.

“We are always learning, always trying to get better at all the skills, be it bowling, batting, or fielding, because you never know when the team needs those runs,” said Arshdeep, who was named Player of the Match. “It can be two runs, four runs, anything. So, you just have to give your best. And I am trying to work as hard as possible with Vikram Bhai regarding my batting as well,” he added.

In the match against Pakistan in New York on June 9, Arshdeep came in at No.9, scoring nine off 13 balls before being run out. He revealed that he requested to bat ahead of Jasprit Bumrah in that game.

“…Jassi Bhai (Bumrah) was supposed to go before me, but I just went in after asking Rohit (Sharma). They were surprised with it, but I told them I will go up regardless of whatever you say,” Arshdeep shared. “I will go at nine because I faced the quickest bowlers in the last game. So yeah, that’s the plan now. I am very confident about my batting. And be it fielding or bowling, you just try to keep getting better,” he said.

Regarding the tournament, Arshdeep emphasized the importance of adapting to different conditions across various venues for achieving success.

India played their first three games in New York and are set to face Canada in their final group-stage match in Florida on Saturday (June 15), before the tournament moves to the Caribbean.

Arshdeep Singh highlighted the importance of adapting to different conditions and match situations. “The main thing is how we adapt to the conditions and to the situations. If there is help in the wicket, we try to get early wickets and restrict them (opponents) to a low total. If we are batting first, we try to make as many runs as possible and give the bowlers a good chance to restrict the opposition,” he explained.

When asked about the team’s morale after three consecutive wins, Arshdeep emphasized the importance of maintaining composure regardless of the outcome. “The emotions stay the same… So yeah, just try to be stable enough, whether we win, whether we lose, and whether we have a good day or a bad day,” he said.
