BCCI selection meeting with head coach Gautam Gambhir to pick India squad for Sri Lanka tour T20 and ODI series postponed- Report
The meeting between the BCCI selection committee and new India head coach Gautam Gambhir to select the squad for the Sri Lanka tour has been rescheduled. Originally planned for July 17, 2024, the meeting will now take place on July 18.
While the exact reason for the delay hasn’t been disclosed, Dainik Jagran reports that a dispute over India’s T20I captaincy contributed to the postponement.
A major topic of discussion is the appointment of the new T20I captain following Rohit Sharma’s retirement from the format after the T20 World Cup 2024 victory. Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav are the leading candidates for the position.
Several reports suggest that Suryakumar Yadav is likely to be chosen over Hardik Pandya due to Pandya’s fitness concerns and availability issues, influencing Gambhir and the selectors’ decision in favor of Yadav.
According to Cricbuzz, Gambhir has shared his ideas on the squad composition for the upcoming Sri Lanka tour, advising the Ajit Agarkar-led panel to select players with strong commitment.
The meeting is expected to take place on July 18, as BCCI secretary Jay Shah is scheduled to travel to Sri Lanka for the ICC annual general meeting from July 19-22.
