T20 World Cup 2024: Cricket fraternity critical of New York pitch as India hammered Ireland out for a paltry 96
The pitch at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York, used for the T20 World Cup 2024 games, has come under scrutiny.
During the venue’s inaugural international match between Sri Lanka and South Africa on June 3, the game turned out to be low-scoring and uneventful. This led to widespread criticism of the playing surface.
The discontent grew after Ireland was bowled out for just 96 runs against India in their Group A match at the Nassau County ground.
Indian bowlers wrapped up Ireland’s innings in 16 overs, with no Irish batter reaching the 30-run mark. Gareth Delany was the highest scorer with 26 runs off 14 balls.
For India, Hardik Pandya took 3 wickets for 27 runs in 4 overs, Jasprit Bumrah claimed 2 wickets for 6 runs in 3 overs, and Arshdeep Singh also took 2 wickets for 35 runs in 4 overs. Additionally, Akshar Patel and Mohammed Siraj each picked up a wicket, with Patel’s figures at 1/3 in 1 over and Siraj’s at 1/13 in 3 overs.
Cricket experts on social media platform X expressed disappointment over Ireland’s innings and raised concerns about the quality of the pitch at the newly constructed stadium in New York.
